Family, Fathers and Hot Dogs

It was early morning I was on my third load of dishes from a family barbeque last Saturday that stretched well into Sunday.  Odd as it sounds, I love that part of a family get together, when everyone has gone and the only thing left are the dishes.  I normally hate to do dishes in the evening, but there is something about washing dishes after a family gathering that is different; the time alone with my thoughts thinking quietly about the people who were just here, and also the people who are no longer here. read more

Finding Balance

September 27, 2021

On Monday September 23rd the Autumn Equinox occurred.  During an equinox we have almost equal amounts of light and dark.  Each day after and until the winter solstice we will continue to lose a little more sunlight each day. Traditionally this is known as harvest time; time to gather the summer up and tuck it away in our memories and  our cupboards to warm us for the coming winter.  For me, turning boxes of soft over ripened tomatoes into red liquid sunshine that I freeze and use throughout the winter months is so satisfying.  Like a tomato rescue, they are a few days away from being tossed out.  As if I am bottling up summer itself and hiding it in my freezer to savor again in soups and sauces throughout the coming winter.    I will miss walking out the front door in the mornings without shoes or jacket, sitting on the front porch waiting for the birds and squirrels to start begging for food and their happy chatter. read more

I MISS YOU ALREADY

August 29, 2014

By Cynthia Johnson

Have you ever found that the thought of missing something was worse than it actually being gone? I miss summer already. In fact I have been feeling for weeks that summer was passing too quickly, as I sat with the window open this morning, my cat cowering from the cool air floating in, this thought came slamming to the forefront of my mind again. read more

The Butterfly Effect

August 17, 2014

By Cynthia K. Johnson

Last Sunday afternoon we drove deep into the woods in a section of Harford County which happens to be a part of Gunpowder Falls State Park.  It’s a favorite spot of ours, away from all technology and consumerism.   We seemed to be in need of healing from nature that can only happen as the spring foliage writes over this past winter’s long and frigid tale. read more

A Week With Myself

April 21, 2013

April 21, 2013

Last Monday afternoon a difficult week began.   I was taking a break to eat, turned on the television and, I found myself watching what was unfolding in Boston.  Being on a bit of a time constraint as usual, I continued to try to eat, and I remember thinking…this is making me sick.  I don’t know whether I was talking about the food, or the mayhem flickering across the screen in front of me.  I watched until I realized, there was nothing else to report, I closed my eyes, said some prayers and continued to get ready for the meditation group. read more
